The Race Against Time

The last 5 days have been a whirlwind, trying to get the house cleared out, and projects done before Saturday.  We had our last hoorah of a yard sale over the weekend. Unfortunately the weather was not great, and so business was mediocre.

On the upside, I have appointments this week to meet with people who are interested in several individual items that I have posted on Craigslist, and the rest of the stuff we were trying to sell is going to Relay for Life.  Many additional projects I was not aware of popped up over the past several days, so we spent quite a bit of time priming and painting our unfinished basement, removing ceiling tiles, and adding some wood paneling.  We still need to finish installing a vanity in the laundry room which already has a toilet. I do have to admit that the basement is looking much nicer than it has over the past 12 years that we have lived here.

We tackled a project in the kitchen as well, updating the 1960’s cabinetry and flooring.  With help from a local flooring company and a friend who laid the tile, we have also painted the cabinets with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, added hardware, and filled in the tile with grout.  Not bad to have a kitchen and basement transformation in 5 days. Thanks to Leslie, Mom (Sharon), Mary, Jeff, and Alice for all their help with labor and helping watch the girls.  The 7 AM to 11 PM work days are not over yet, however.  We have 4 days to have the house completely cleared out and cleaned.

I figure in 5 days I can finally rest during the flight to England, the start to our new adventure. It’s definitely going to be difficult and emotional to leave our strong support system of family and friends, as well as our kitties who will be babysat by our good friends Kelly and Katon and baby Kai. With the advances of technology over the past few years, though, we will hopefully be able to stay in close touch via cheap phone rates, Skype, and FaceTime. Even so, I’m sure we will be counting down the days until my parents come to visit this fall. We can look forward to helping plan a trip for my mother in law to visit as well.
